For parents of non-speaking and minimally speaking autistic children

Your child is broadcasting. Nobody handed you the receiver.

The signal has been going out for years: in the body, in the sound, in the movement, in the thing they do just before they do the other thing.

It isn't missing. It's unreceived. And tuning in is a skill, which means somebody can teach it to you.

Dr. Catherine C. Acotto, PhD, CCC-SLP. 26 years and 50,000+ clinical hours with non-speaking and minimally speaking autistic children.

You've already stopped asking whether. You're asking how.

How to communicate with a nonverbal autistic child

How does a non verbal autistic child communicate

Communication apps for autistic child

That's further than most people ever get, and you got there on your own.

What came back was app lists. An app is a transmitter. It does nothing about the receiver, which is why a device that arrives without the reading skill ends up in a bag by the door.

Your child is not having behavioral episodes. They are sending messages, in the only language available to them.

When your child melts down, they are not breaking. They are broadcasting.

The signal is there. What's missing is the receiver.

Tuning in starts with four frequencies.

Before you can answer a message you have to know what kind of message it is. There are four, and almost everything your child does is one of them.

  • Requesting I want that. Bring it, open it, turn it on.
  • Protesting No. Stop. Not that one, not now.
  • Escaping I need to be out of this: this room, this noise, this task.
  • Seeking My body needs input. Pressure, motion, sound, something.

From the outside, those four can look nearly identical. A child pulling at your sleeve and a child pulling at your sleeve are often two completely different sentences.

What tells them apart isn't the pull. It's what came in the ten minutes before it, and that is readable, once somebody shows you the sequence to look for.

One mother described it perfectly and had no name for it.

"She never just shares something with us. She never shows us something funny. She never tells us she's excited or scared. Everything is just about what she wants."

She had noticed the exact thing. Her daughter was requesting all day long and almost never relating, two different kinds of communication, with two different paths into them.

She was reading her child accurately and had no framework to put it in. That is the whole gap, and it is the entire job of this course.

Three questions that will show you a pattern this week

After something breaks down, most parents replay the last sixty seconds. The answer almost never lives there. Ask instead:

"What did I notice in the hour before? What did I notice in the thirty minutes before? What did I notice in the ten minutes before?"

Ask those three for one week and you will see a shape you have been living inside for years without being able to name.

Signals that get answered don't have to escalate.

That's the mechanism underneath all of it. A quiet signal that goes unread doesn't go away, it gets louder until somebody receives it. Reading it early is how a hard afternoon stops turning into a hard evening.

And the sentence that costs families years

"We should try everything else before we try AAC."

Almost every family says some version of it, usually because someone told them symbols would take words away.

Symbols don't take words away. Pressure does. A child who has a reliable way to be understood spends the day communicating instead of bracing. Module 4 is how symbols get introduced so they actually mean something, without the fear, and without standing over a child saying "say juice, say juice and you can have it."

Who is teaching you this

Dr. Catherine C. Acotto, PhD, CCC-SLP.

Twenty-six years, full time, with non-speaking and minimally speaking autistic children, not a general caseload with some autism in it. That population, her entire career. More than 50,000 hours of it.

She still works in a California county special education program, which means she isn't teaching from theory. She's teaching from last Tuesday.

Her 2014 doctoral research at Arizona State University followed one teenage girl with autism whose aggression and self-injury filled two hours of a five-hour school day, head-banging hard enough to break skin, with a residential placement on the table.

Offering her something she genuinely wanted at the moment of “no” cut the duration of those episodes by 64% in a big box store, 74% in a grocery store and 81% in her classroom, and it held at six-month follow-up.

One girl, one study, measured and published under Dr. Acotto's own name. Not a claim about your child, a demonstration of what changes when somebody reads the signal instead of managing the behavior.

Silence to Signals™

The SIGNAL™ Framework, in six modules and twenty-four lessons, the same sequence she uses with families in practice.

  • Stop guessing what your child wants. See the Child builds the catalogue of what they are already communicating.
  • Know why it escalated, not just that it did. Interpret the Behavior is the neuroscience underneath the signal.
  • Stop losing the room before you have started. Get in Sync is why connection has to come before correction.
  • Hand your child a way to be understood today. Normalize Symbols is AAC without the fear and without the pressure.
  • See it coming while there is still room to act. Anticipate Breakdowns is reading the sequence before it peaks.
  • Keep it working when you are not the one in the room. Layer Communication makes it hold across people and places.

Plus the Signal Community™, unlimited Signal Translator™ AI trained on her knowledge base, and a monthly live Q&A with her.

Lifetime access. One tier. Nothing held back for an upsell.

Ten Founding Families* get two things nobody after them does

Weekly office hours with Dr. Acotto. Not monthly. Weekly.

First offer on any advanced training we build.

The founding offer stays open until all ten places are filled. There's no date on it, when the tenth family joins, it closes. Everyone after that enrolls at the same price, with the same course, the same community and the same tools. The weekly hours and the first offer stay with the ten.

* Founding Families are the first ten to go through the course, not the first families Dr. Acotto has worked with. She has spent 26 years and more than 50,000 hours with non-speaking and minimally speaking autistic children, one family at a time.

When she began practicing in 2000, the CDC identified autism in 1 in 150 children. Today it's 1 in 31. The number of families who need someone who can read a non-speaking child has multiplied. One caseload hasn't. This is the first time she has built her method into a course, so it can reach the families a single practice never could.

My promise, and it is not a refund

Once you can read your child's signals, you do not stop being able to read them. So a money back guarantee on something you keep is a formality, and you have had enough formalities from people selling to desperate parents.

Here is what I will actually do. I work with you until you can read your child's communication signals. That is the thing you came for, and it is the thing I am on the hook for.

Straight answers

"We tried an app and he ignored it."

An app is vocabulary without a conversation. Symbols work when they're introduced into something your child already wants, at a moment they're already communicating. That sequence is Module 4, and it's the part the app never came with.

"My child does communicate. People just don't listen."

Then you're the parent this was built for. The course won't spend your time convincing you your child has something to communicate, it gives you the framework to catalogue it, and the language to hand it to a school team that keeps missing it.

"Isn't this the speech therapist's job?"

It's part of it, for forty-five minutes a week. You have the other hundred and sixty-seven hours: the car, the bath, the grocery store, the ten minutes before bed. This teaches the person who's actually there.

"I don't have time for a course."

The lessons are built for a day that's already full. The first exercise takes ten minutes and happens inside a routine you already do.

You don't need your child to start transmitting. They already are.

It's been going out for years. This is the framework for tuning it in, and it's the difference between a house full of guessing and a house where somebody is finally receiving.

P.S. Your child has been transmitting for years. The only thing missing has been a receiver, and that is the one part of this you can change this week. Start here.
